What’s your favorite Christmas gift? For me as a child, it might have been a doll’s tea set, a flute, or another of Walter Farley’s Black Stallion books (the Island Stallion was my favorite). As an adult, hmm . . . My child’s artwork, a small hand pressed into plaster-of-paris and painted at school? The Lladro piece that fit me perfectly, sent by my husband while he was out on his submarine? Mostly, it’s just being with my family.Whatever it is for me, whatever it is for you, this is the real gift – and it’s fast become my all-time favorite short Christmas video. It’s the 15th of December and I’m still trying to put Christmas decorations up. Final exams don’t help, plus the fact that some much-needed surfaces are still covered by unpacked-but-not-put-away stuff that I’m not sure where to put in this new house. Actually, it’s not a new house, just new to us. But the layout is different, and sometimes frustrating. Don’t get me wrong – I mostly love the house. It’s filled with skylights and many large windows, but that doesn’t leave much wall space for hanging things. Where do I put the Christmas wall quilt from my sister-in-law? Where do I put the large wall hanging of Bethlehem that I made years ago? Or my Joy-Joy-Joy forest animal cross-stitch? And the nativity sets – where do I put the multitude of nativity sets? I love Thanksgiving and I love Christmas, but I’ve never rushed to put up Christmas decorations Thanksgiving weekend. In fact, I usually start with just Christmas music for a week and THEN decorate. And the tree goes up about a week later. The week of music was on purpose, and the week of decorating was just me dragging things out. But I thought this time would be different. We moved back from Ireland last November and spent a couple months in a temporary apartment. The only Christmas decorations I had were a few small items we included in the small air shipment. Everything else was coming by slow boat, or was left here in storage in the first place. So this year, eager-me wanted to bring the Christmas boxes down two weeks ago.
